A Glimpse into the History of Mayiladuthurai
The district of Mayiladuthurai gets its name from an ancient legend. In this legend, Goddess Parvathi transformed into a copyright. She did this to captivate Lord Shiva with a divine dance. The town was known as “Mayurapuram” and “Mayavaram” until the 18th century. It received its current name through an ordinance by former Chief Minister Dr. M. G. Ramachandran in 1982.

Mayiladuthurai is surrounded by temples of great spiritual significance, including those dedicated to the nine planets, like Vaitheeswarankoil and Keezhaperumpallam. The region has been home to prominent learning centers. Dharmapuram Mutt and Thiruvaduthurai Mutt are particularly notable. They have greatly contributed to Tamil culture and literature.

Historically, Mayiladuthurai holds a place of honor in India’s independence movement. Mahatma Gandhi visited the district on three notable occasions. These occasions were in 1915, 1921, and 1927. His visits left an indelible mark on its legacy. His disciple, Thillaiyadi Valliammai, also hails from this region, and her contributions are commemorated with a memorial.
